Size of dog, and availability has a lot to do with what to feed.
Heres a great tool too use when trying too find the best http://www.dogresources.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=613
Avoid grocery store dog foods... they are loaded with fillers, preservatives, and usually corn is the first indredient listed. Go natural.
Yes, you will need a collar, (and you'll have to buy another as he/she grows) a leash, bowls, toys, and I strongly recommend crate training.
**PLEASE.. dont forget the vet visit, and vaccinations.

When you first bring this puppy home, you need to keep him on the same kind of food he's been eating. If you want to change to something else, you need to do it very gradually or he'll get the runs - and you don't want a sick puppy.
He will also need a collar (nylon is good for a young puppy) and leash, bed, crate, lots of toys, nail clippers and brush suitable for the breed.
Have fun with your new puppy!

Puppy food, related to its size, ie Large Breed Puppy food if it is large. Definitly a leash and a collar. Really important, a indoor kennel if it is going to be left alone because it can get into stuff that can hurt it. My personal opinion is the first thing you should "get" is a vet and a checkup for your puppy, LOTS of toys. And you personally are going to have to tune up your patience skills. You are going to need them. But dogs are more than worth it. You get out of your puppy what you put into him.

If you're buying a puppy, you should try wet food until the puppy's jaw and teeth are stronger.Buy a variety of treats to see what it likes. You should get a collar and tags as soon as possible, just in case it gets lost. Be sure to buy it a lot of different toys to see what it likes, and buy brushes and shampoo to groom it. Give it lots of love and attention!

I liked Hills Science Diet for puppies. It is well balanced and good for them. They need lots of safe toys to chew on as well as a safe place for them to go. Mine like a dog bed and a enclosed dog bag. They like to go lay inside that when they are frightened or want to sleep away from noises. My dogs favorite chew bones are the busy bones. You will need a collar and leash if you plan to take it outside and train it. Puppy pads to train it for going the bathroom in the house, so they don't pee everywhere. Dog bowls, water and food of course. Vet shots, bath shampoo and a brush. Treats for when it does something good. Lots of Love and attention. That about covers it. Hope I didn't forget anything. Good luck with your new friend.

First, get a good vet and talk with them. Follow their advice. Puppies need puppy food. Then enroll in doggy behavior class. And then remember, you can't buy love! There are lots of websites, books, and animal care centers that can help you.
