This is a very difficult one to answer, as what is best in your eyes? Do you need 5,6 or 7 seats? Do you want manual or automatic? etc. etc. Also there is inevitably a compromise whether it is legroom in the 3rd row seats or boot space etc.

Here are some I would consider:
Toyota Corolla Verso (neat 7 seat packaging for a small MPV)
Mazda5 MPV - 6 good size seats (7th only occasional)
Ford S-Max - sporty and offers excellent space
Mitsubishi Grandis - often over looked, but well specced.

I use a Ford Galaxy People Carrier which can convert into Multi Purpose when the back seats are moved but I dont think they have a lot of room even when doing that...I had more room believe it or not in my Diahtsu MultiJet MPV because of its higher roof than a lot of the normal MPV have...but there again its a matter of personal choice.

We have a Ford Ce-Max and never had any problems with it. Lots of power too in the TDCI. The new S-Max looks nice aswell.
