This isnt really a simple answer. (Medical student at end of course)

There are several hypotheses about depression. One is that part of the brain responsible for mood does not secrete enough hormone (seratonin, the part of brain amgydala). This leads to depression. This is the simplest explanation of the why the brain works in depression.

This bit of the puzzle, the hormone, is hereditary to a certain extent. Those who are depressed may have children with a slightly increased risk of depression. This does not mean that if you get depressed your children will.

This is because of the second bit if the puzzle = psychology. For depression to occur you need to have a problems with your day-to-day life, the ability to cope with diffulties and a triggering event. This is ontop of the brain chemistry.

SO in short, if your child encompasses hardship in their life and are unable to cope they are slightly more likely to develope depression.

This was from my memory of lectures over a year ago but looking at the source below it seems correct.

Some psychological problems are proved to be hereditary, some not. I think depression has some links to the parents and family, whether genetically passed on or its effects on the person after birth. Professor Jung says most psychologically disordered perons are those who have lost their way, like wandering sheep, the correct way that leads to God. So I also answered why depression is widespread?

Of course; depression can be genetic. I've seen it being passed down family lines for years. Most mental health problems are genetic, usually to predisposed organic (structural) brain disorders, or hereditary lack of chemicals in the brain. For instance, my father has Asperger's Syndrome, and I've inherited it from him.

Not really hereditary. But there is a greater chance you can have depression if other members of the family have it and it doesn't even have to be immediate family either. I know it runs in my family.

there is no conclusive evidence which indicates that there is a genetic link although- as with most mental illness you are more likley to suffer from it if there is a family history. with depression this can often be related to environmental factors as people are living together in the same situations.

yes, the predisposition can be inherited. But it's hard to tell since depression affects so many people. None of my ancestors were suffering from major depression, though i've been diagnosed with one.
