If your birds lay eggs, leave them in the cage for about 20-21 days. This would be the normal amount of time for an egg to hatch. A female bird alone in the cage will lay eggs, but they won't be fertile. As soon as the egg is gone (or hatched), her body starts cycling again to produce another egg (similar to menstual cycle in humans). If there is a male in the cage also and the egg is fertilized, you can leave the egg in the cage for the female to sit on. Unless you're planning on breeding your birds and hand-feeding the babies, there's no need to take the eggs out and incubate them.

If you don't want to leave an unfertilized egg in the cage (they smell horrible if they break!), buy a wooden egg at a craft store and use it as a substitute. It's important to remember to take it out after 3 weeks though, just like you would with the regular egg.
