Some of the information that will determine the quantity needed are the number of people being served, whether or not it will be served in controlled portions, or if the meat will be served on a "help yourself" basis. Based on this, a 4 to 7 pound roasting chicken will serve approximately five to seven people. (Meaning a 4-pounder may feed up to seven people if someone was controlling the portions served...or a 7-pounder may only feed five people if it was served on a "help yourself" basis.)

Your six pound chicken should be the perfect size for your extended family meal.

Enjoy!

I do agree if you have controlled portions this would be enough. I know when we go over to some of our friends they have small servings. Whereas, when I have dinner at my home, I prefer to have people help themselves, in which case the serving sizes are usually larger. I don't like my guests to go home hungry. I also don't like to still be hungry because I barely just made enough. My mother always made more than enough so people didn't feel guilty about eating the last piece etc. Besides you can always have leftovers, or make a soup or save for a stir fry.

My husband used to do catering and they used this "rule of thumb", It's usually 1/4 lb. per person. That's twelve people (of course you can serve more chicken than that if that is your preference).

Assuming that there will be other dishes to go with the chicken it usually works out well. Enjoy your meal!

A good rule to follow when coooking whole birds is 1 pound for each person. If that isn't enough, your guests eat too much.

That should be enough chicken, just have a couple of good side dishes as well as the usual potatoes.
