Ok, Martinis are not melon, chocolate, apple, or any other fruity/sweet crap.
While traditional martinis are gin, I'm not offended by vodka ones.
The most important part is the type of alcohol you use. Always use an Ultra Premium or Premium alcohol.
Gin: Sapphire, Boodles, Hendrick's Note: This list does NOT include Tanqueray, gordon's, plain Bombay.
Vodka: Ketel One, Stoli, and other ultra premium vodkas. Note: This list does NOT include Absolut, or ANY flavoured vodkas.
Then, you put it in a cocktail shaker with some ice and shake or stir until it is very very cold. Personally, I add some ice water to the martini glasses while I am mixing and measuring. Dump the ice water out and you'll have a very cold glass. Just before adding the vodka/gin, a take a small amount of vermouth and swirl it around in the glass, dumping any residual out. Then, add your liquor.
If you want a dirty martini, add a *small* amount of olive brine (juice) to the liquor in the shaker.
Serve with one olive and enjoy, always holding the glass by the stem.

First, start with good spirits... for a vodka martini, try Grey Goose or Ketel One. For a gin martini, I like Bombay. Then use Niolly Pratt dry vermouth. I prefer a dry martini, which means using just a capful of vermouth over a shaker filled with ice and the vodka or gin. Shake well for about 1 minute and pour into a martini glass. Use three pitted cocktail olives. Enjoy!
