One of two things.
One: Something that he likes a lot, like if he liked baseball, getting something to do with baseball.
Two: My other suggestion which I prefer better than the first is to get him something that will remind him of you, that is special as well. Especially if you two had to ever be a part, he would have something there with him to remember you by.

Electronics, there are plenty of little knick-knacks that aren't too expense and most guys like gadgets. For example, if he has a DVd player, TV, VCR, and other compnents maybe you could get him a fansy Logitec universal remote. Maybe a little MP3 player there are some really nice one's for well under 100$.
But if you are on a tight budget try dinner and a movie he likes that you wouldn't normally watch with him.

Besides gets the insanely expensive gift. I have a few ideas:
1. Get a nice picture of you two in a 5x7 or 8x10 in a very nice frame.
2. Cook him dinner (something fancy).
3. Take him on a weekend getaway.

Well, first...I don't know how long you have to decide, but has he been talking about something in particular or just walking and saying "hey that is cool"... those are always good hints and when people talk in general like that it is always a big surprise to them that you were listening and went back to get it...
Hobbies, are a good place to start.. too.
Eveyone likes music.

how about make him.........and I ve gotten these.......and they re awesome...........a "coupon book".........with handmade printed coupons for different things you know he d enjoy(back massage, dinner with all the trimmings, bathe him, or something to do with some hobby he has)...........its inexpensive..........and remembered far past some item.......you d store buy
