If your hair turns orange when you go with the blond colors, try a ash blond. They have the darker shades of ash blond that will darken your hair but not go real dark so you wont look like you are copying the other girls. If you don't want to go with the ash shades pick the darkest blond or the lightest of the browns. Have fun with your new look!

If you want to go dark but still show that you are an individual and not copying everyone, why not try black with red streaks.
Or even try Lorel Color Expert, they have the base colour and highlights in the pack.
Being fall heading into winter in America, a dark red often works really well, it will cover the dark roots. But, you will need to dye your hair more often if you do decide to go red as it fades faster than other colours.
There's also a plum colour out there, it's black with tints of purple in it. My sister dyed her hair that colour a few years back and it looked fantastic.

If you can't afford to have it done professionally (which you should do) in a beauty salon...why not go to a beauty college and have practicing students do your hair. Most of them are very good and always have an instructor(a licensed hairstylist) check everything out that they do. They charge less than half of the price as a regular salon.

I would go for a golden brown. It will still have a lightness to it, like your blonde shade but will be darker and closer to your natural color. Feria makes great brown shades. Look for their Hi-Lift Brown shades.

If your hair is dark, go brunette so your roots won't differ
