If you are having back spasms, apply an ice pack - 20 minutes on 20 minutes off - throughout the day until the spasms subside. Then follow with heat. Drink lots of water during this time to flush out the lactic acid being generated by the spasm.

Also, once the spasms subside, you need to start stretching out the back. It will be very stiff and sore. Lay flat on your back at the edge of a sofa or bed. Bring the leg opposite the edge over and let it hang over the edge, keeping your shoulders flat on the bed/sofa. Maintain that position for as long as you can comfortably. Turn around and repeat on the other side. Do this frequently throughout the day.

Beyond that, consider chiropractics and massage (which obviously you can't get today - Sunday). Both are very effective. But if there is any possibility of trauma related to the pain, see a doctor first.

There is a guy called Dr. John Sarno. - H. Stern said he cured him of back pain, and I saw a 20/20 segment on him. He says that back pain is often pain diflected when we do not want to handle things that are bothering us.

I was having chronic pain for a while and I followed his suggstions ans it did relieve the pain.

It sounds very hokey but it really did work.

When in pain you say to yourself, I can handle the situation I would rather deal with it than feel this pain in my back. I will face what is bothering me..or something like that, it was a long time ago. I know it sounds crazy but it really did work. If I were you and in allot of pain I would check more into it and give it a shot, it can't hurt... sorry no pun intended.
Good Luck.

You need to do some exercises specifically for the lower back. You should be able to find some on the net. Pelvic tilt is one and knee pulls also. Stretching exercises will help also.

Go to a chiropractor. They offer relief to millions every year. Don't believe me, then why does Tiger Woods and every other prof athlete hire them to follow them around. To keep their bodies healthy and moving properly. Chiropractors have more hours of training in neuromuscularskeletal conditions then anyone other then orhos, and they can treat you without the risk of terrible side effects. Don't believe me, ask one what his malpractice insurance costs him. I would guess it is less then your car insurance. They can help you and your body function better.

Maybe you've pinched a nerve or compressed a disc in your vertebrae. You need to seek out a doctor who can help you with this.
