Is it ordinary cardboard, because mine caught fire, now I don't know whether I should buy a special piece, and where would I get it? Thanks

That's something you should have removed when you got the microwave. You don't use it.

Seriously, the cardboard is for you to test the machine when you first use it.......

You are supposed to fire the microwave for 3 seconds at full power after placing the cardboard on the turntable. After 3 seconds, open the microwave, take out the card and take a bite. It the cardboard tastes sugary, then the machine is faulty. You should take it back for a refund. If it tastes hot like a red hot chilly pepper, then you should sprinkle some honey on it and have the cardboard for a snack. it means the machine is good working order and it will last you for atleast another 20 years.

Do not forget to buy a similar cardboard every six months and test the machine regularly.......

It's not cardboard, it's a special sheet of material made of mica (which I believe is a natural occuring mineral found in seams of slate). It's there to cover the microwave exit port (the hole in the metal interior where the microwaves enter the oven) and stop food and moisture getting into the electronics. It's transparent at microwave frequencies so let's the microwaves through while stopping everything else (including fingers!) getting into the high voltage circuitry.

It also has zero water content so it doesn't get hot as the microwaves pass through it. If you replace it with a piece of cardboard you'll probably create a fire, as the carboard naturally contains moisture and will get hotter and hotter and eventually ignite when you turn the microwave on !

I know what you mean. It's on one of the sides inside the microwave am I right? Mine has that and I don't think you should remove it. Maybe it absorbs some of the radiation but I wouldn't know for definite as I'm no engineer. Hope someone gives you the answer. In situations like this I would just buy a new one. You can buy them in any supermarket for about £25. I bet buying that part separately would cost more. Good luck but don't take any risks.

as microwaves won't pass through metal, there needs to be an opening for the microwaves to pass from the magnetron (the thing that generates microwaves) into the cooking area of the microwave. It's this opening that the piece of card is covering. The card is there to stop food splatter etc. from getting into the magnetron making it easier to clean.

What a coincidence.Mine fell too.Its not totally cardboard but I see a kind of mica crystals on it .I suppose its important but the microwave seems running normally without it.

There should not be any cardboard inside the microwave.

Should have removed it when you first bought the item - it's packaging.
