Religion....does anyone feel that it is merely a crutch and that it is the root cause (apart form oil) of all the worlds problems?

I believe it is a "psychological crutch" that helps people accept their delicate vulnerability in a vast Universe.

Religion per se does not cause problems, when personalized and practised on ones own. Problems occur when groups of fanatics force the acceptance of their particular belief upon others. Vicious statements made by ignorant people cause hurt and finally revenge.

Growing up in a predominately Roman Catholic town as a non-practising Protestant, my mother was called 'WHORE" because my father and mother were not married in a Roman Catholic Church. Catholics were merely expressing the doctrine of their Church when saying that. To this day I have NO compunction about criticizing any aspect of the Roman Catholic Church I find to be morally objectionable.

the point is that it helps people feel safe and "understand" their lives. Is it true, no most of it is BS. Is it the root of all evil? In some ways yes. but you can't deny all of the good that comes out of organized religion, or the fact that the good far outweighs the bad.
Look at it this way, For every priest you hear about that molests a child, you are NOT hearing about the THOUSANDS of priests that do good deeds every single day. you only hear abou tthe bad stuff, because it is the only thing that gets reported. it is news because it is the last thing you would expect FROM religion

You answered your own question.

As far back in time that we have any record for, the human race has needed a parent-figure to give them support.
Man fabricates religion and gods and spirits to give him hope. Problem is that, over time, the original intent is very often distorted. Problem is that human nature is such that man will be aggressive about his chosen life-style and fight anyone who says that he is being silly if he believes in a god.

Hey, big boy! You are being silly if you believe in a supernatural and totally imaginary friend who controls your destiny and gives you a purpose to your life. Get real?

Interest in religion (except for the even sillier muslims) is waning in the western world, as we are better-educated and as science explains all those things that were taken as miracles or god-given. It wasn't too long ago that 'we' believed that the sun revolved around the earth, that the earth was, in fact, flat .... etcetera and so on.

The time may come when religion falls totally - except for the very stupid muslims.

Yes it is one of the main problems in the world. Point is that there is only one true religion. As the bible says the whole world is lying in the power of the wicked one. That is the cause of most of the problems. If you are a christian the point is that God has a purpose and many of the problems that we are experiencing are going to vindicated Gods purpose, his name.

in my opinion religion has it's place in our society and that is not the problem. The problem is all the followers are blind to the fact that these organized churches are so influential on the political side of life, these churches know they need money but there greatest asset is the followers, and the would be victim is unaware that the church uses them to get there agendas passed.

It does seem to start alot of controversy...and men have fought wars over religion...but actually seeking God as an individual can be a powerful and exciting journey. I cannot imagine life without wanting to get to know the being that created it.

Do you think if everone starts thinking like you than this world will be free of any problems?

We as humans has this in our nature to fight. If not oil then religion. If not religion then something else. But we can't leave fighting. We must always fight. Its in our gene. Its in our blood. We have to fight always.
