The pediatrician said that lice hate the smell of Suave Green Apple shampoo, so use that. Also, keep her hair in a pony-tail and use hair spray around her ears and neck to repel them.
IF you suspect she has been around someone in the last day or so that HAS lice.. you should put mayonnaise on her head very thick to the scalp (use a shower cap to keep the mayo from getting on anything) This will smother anything live on her head. DO this for a couple of days in a row to be safe (it won't hurt her and it is good for your hair)
Also encourage her not to share coats combs or pillows with people.
Check kids before they come in your house... (parents won't like this but O well) Just tell little Johnny "Oh hey I see gum on your head.. have you been chewing gum, come here let me see.... don't tell the little critter carriers what you are doing so you dont hurt their feelings. Lice dont know about upper or lower class families so they dont discriminate, dont blame the friends... any kid can get it and you should value your child's friends, same as you wouldnt want someone ousting your kid if she had every had it)
Send kids who play with her in the yard home if you see them scratching.
They also hate green alcohol, so you could do that too, after the mayo.

there is really no foolproof way to prevent it, as lice do not discriminate between clean, dirty, long, short, dark or light hair. if you know other kids that have lice, do your best to keep her away from them. Don't share combs, brushes, hats pillows etc. Lice are nothing more than an inconvinience really, they will not make your daughter sick. if you are unfortunate enough to come across them, wash all bedding, towels and hats in hot water and line dry. use a good headlice product from the chemist, preferably one with natural ingredients such as Moove, every 3 days for 3 weeks. A pain I know, but the only effective way to break the cycle. regular shampoos will do nothing, they have become immune to the detergents in supermarket shampoos. also, you can comb 100% pure tea tree oil through her hair every night and wash out in the morning. lice can only survive off the scalp for 6-24 hours, depending on how warm it is, they will live longer in the summer. Good luck!

Unfortunately, there really is no way to prevent lice. However, if you know someone that has it then don't let her go near them, their house, or their car. Keep her away.
That is probably the only way.
You really can't do anything about lice until it gets in the hair or on the body. That's a whole different ball game there.

My daughter just got over a nasty infestation of lice. They say for you to put hairspray or gel or mousse, and yes even ethnic products in the hair. The lice do not like it. Make sure that she doesn't share ANY hair items and that her hair is pulled back. Also, do not let coats, scarfs touch each other. Lice know no boundaries. Rich, poor, clean hair, dirty hair. They just like hair. Good luck!

Its so easy... Maintain hyegine by simple habits _ always keep hair clean by washing them clearly. Tell her to stay away from girls infected wid lice and those not clean. If one gets Lice, its very easy to cure by cream like Malathion etc consult hair specialist.

You can....
keep her hair cut short
wash her hair everyday
use a hairdryer to dry her hair
make sure she doesn't share a comb or brush with her friends
Those are just a few things that I remember. I am sure there is more that I have forgotten
