First take 10 coins - put 5 coins each on either side of the balance. By replacing the coins on hand into the balance, balance both the sides of the scale. Now you have two coins in your hand - of which one is fake.
Take one coin from the earlier 10 pieces - which will be certainly genuine one, and weigh the coins in hand one by one with this genuine coin. In maximum 2 attempts you can identify the fake one (which will be heavier / lighter than the genuine coin)

Divide coins into three stacks of 4 (A, B & C). Weigh stack A & B.
IF THE SCALE **DOES** BALANCE then the fake is in the stack C. Discard both stack A and 2 of 4 from stack B from scale. Put 2 of 4 coins from C on scale on empty side (where A had been). If the scale doesnt balance, note whether 2 new coins are heavier or lighter. Split the two coins from C, one on each side of the scale. If the 2 C coins were heavier, the heavier coin is fake . If the 2 C coins were lighter, the lighter is fake. BUT IF the 2 B do balance with the 2 C, discard those 2 C and 1 of the B. Then weigh the remaining B against one of the remaining 2 C. If 1 B and 1 C dont balance, the C on the scale is fake. If the 1 B and 1 C do balance, the unweighed C is the fake,
BUT *** IF THE SCALE WITH A & B **DOES NOT ** BALANCE, the C coins are the correct weight. I have not figured though the remaining 2 weighings.... sorry but I do have an interactive link to help you....

1/2 of the whole will either be heavier or lighter. Process of elimination. With a scale spilt in 2 (6 pieces each)Out of those 6 split in 2(3 pieces each) Out of the 3, 2 quarters will be either heavier or lighter than the one, to determine which one you weigh it with the ones already eliminated. The majority rules either lighter or heavier.
