If you have contaminated meat, like chicken for instance you can't boil it and make it safe to eat. I left out a pack of chicken the other night and forgot about it. I wasted alot of chicken. It was a value pack. Everyone said "Oh my god, you need to throw it out"! But my theory was maybe I could boil it and it would be okay to eat. What do you think?

I wouldn't try it, if it's left out over night I can almost guarantee that it's spoiled and can make you really sick, micro-organisms are present on chicken even if washed and over a short period of time, the microorganisms grow and contaminate all the meat on the chicken. I wouldn't even try to salvage it, just throw it away. Your health is much more important than how much you paid at the grocery store for chicken.

In 1981 I ate a piece of contaminated chicken. The result! One month in hospital with Salmonella and campylobacter poisoning that developed into ulcerative colitis. Six months off work. Loss of three stones (42lbs) in weight and I'm still under observation 25 years later.

As far as water is concerned it depends on the contamination. Heat at boiling point 100 deg C will kill any germs and most micro-organisms but if the contamination is solid,. ie dirt based, this will not be removed. Also any type of poison in the water that is not organic, but chemical, will not be destroyed. The only way to make the water safe is by distillation (boil the water and condense the steam).

If you only left it out for one night you could have safely used it.

But the difference is, boil water and it all gets to 100 degrees.

Boil, or cook in any other way, chicken and you have to ensure the middle of the meat reaches a temperature that will kill any problems.

I guess it depends. Was it frozen when you put it out on the counter, or was it already thawed?
If it was frozen, you are probably safe, as it takes hours to thaw.
If it was already thawed, then you will want to throw it away. Better to be safe than sorry.

It depends on how long you left it out and the temperature in the room....
if just 6 or 8 hours it would be ok...
Im assuming it was frozen..
If not frozen i would throw it out...

the meat begins to rot, which is a process that cannot be reversed or boiled away.

I don't think you should take the chance. And no, you couldn't boil it.
