She has very long hair and her belly and chin have gone all greasy from eating tuna in oil (she also smells !)- damn cat rolled in it. Last time I washed her it took 3hours to gat her dry! I tried a hair drier on a low setting (which she didnt mind) but it still took ages! I used a veterinary shampoo made for cats but its not up to the job- didn't do anything last time. she keeps coming over for cuddles but I cant bear to touch her as she stinks! HELP!

I would advise using baby shampoo, I have bathed several of my cats with that because they go under cars and get oil all over them.

The baby shampoo works very well it is strong enough to get the oil out yet gentile enough so I don't have to worry about getting it in the kitty's eyes.

As for drying her I would towel dry her the best you can, and maybe blow dry her on a low setting since she does not mind that. But don't stress I think that she would prefer to dry herself anyway.

Good Luck !

hi, i have 5 cats, three are maine coons so are long haired, i have kept maine coons for several years, and have learnt over this time that greasy hair is usually caused by illness or by diet. if the cats is not displaying signs of illness ie weight loss, sneezing or runny eyes then it is probably diet related and dry food for a while may be the best solution, you can buy special shampoo from pet shops or baby shampoo is also good, however someone has suggested talc and this will absorb the grease. Unfortunately there is no quicker way to dry the cat than naturally or with a hairdyrer which is good if it doesnt mind as it could catch a cold being wet for a long time. bathing a lot is not reccommende as it removes natural oils from the skin and this can also cause problems and natural imbalances in the cats coat. it can take hours to brush tangle out of a cats coat, my cats won t let me brush their stomachs as this is their most vulnerable area. if bathing and brushing are a major problem that sometimes you haveto shave the cats stomach as matts and tangles can cause abcesses in the skin so avoidance is the best route.

Well if you don't want to touch mr.cuddly then I highly suggest taking him to Petsmart there they have professional bathers and can also trim your cats chin/belly hair so it doesn't happen so much. They can also recommend shampoos for different stuff for instance my husky has urine stains on her white coat and I have to use special whitening shampoo and I have to consistently bathe her once a week. I am having her professionally trained so hopefully we won't need to keep her in her kennel at night or whenever my husband and I go out. That where this problem seems to occur. Anyways good look with your cat hopefully you will be able to snuggle together again. Oh and if you do decide to take him to the bathers make sure you bring his cage they can't cage the kitties in back to dry with all of the dogs back there as well.

For starters I wouldn't feed her Tuna again.

First brush her thoroughly, you don't want to wash any more hair than you absolutely have to.

Try a baby shampoo. It would be very mild but lathers well.

I saw this interesting cat bathing method, I haven't used it, but it worked well for the person I saw do it.

Use a bucket, so the cat will stand up, paws on the edge in 8 or 10 inches of water. They are not supposed to panic so much this way. Have a dishpan of rinse water next to you with a mug or something to pour the rinse water over them.

Good Luck.

Johnsons Baby Shampoo (not supermarket own brand) as it is non-sting if you accidentally get it in her eyes and do the best you can to dry her with the drier as you did before and a towel which has not been washed in fabric conditioner (makes them more absorbent!), but don't worry about drying her too much as she'll do it herself mostly but keep her in the warm until she is actually bone dry.
Good luck with getting the tangles out of her fur though!

go to a pet store and ask, they will know what to use. careful when using shampoo around the cats face not to get in their eyes. a towel and the hair drier would both help but as you said she is a long haired cat it will take some time for her to dry off.

you cant just put our shampoo on go to a pet shop or tesco or shop like that they have them there then dry her off with towell and then brush her or hair dryer will have to do but dont let her outside for a few hours after she might catch a cold!!! you could put baby conditioner on her after the shampoo to help to brush her and the smell would be good but make sure you wash it out good

Cats hate baths and are not meant to have them they should lick themselves clean. Try draining juice from tuna and maybe trimming fur that's getting in bowl.
