Pittie!! But seriously... do you have any kids? Take 'em down to a shelter and rescue a pup... get one that gets along with you/kids/signifigant other. The breed isn't important, the heart is.

I would go to the national breeders websites and actually talk to other pet owners and find the "right" one for you lifestyle.

To take care of your pet, its not cheap. To adopt it will be $40-$100 and then a pedigree will coat you $200 -$1000.

You need to get its shots and neutered (unless you plan to bred for profit- just do it before you bring the pet home) that about $200.

Average bag of food a week is $10-30 a week, that's over $100 a month with Heart worm medications (a must- that's a horrible way to die) and toys etc. You will need basic training for you both that is about $100 [this is fun, take the whole family]. There are leash and pooper scooper laws and so "doggy and owner" manners are needed.

Don't forget to "dog proof" your house, some plants and chemical will kill them.

Dogs can live to be 15 years old+, so you want to take a lot of care into finding the right one for your family. You will own that pet longer than your car, so use good judgement and babysit a friends "dog" if you like it. Animal insurance is available. With diseases like Cancer, Aids and others, its not a bad idea.

Think about all the conditions of your home, children's ages, travels, job and what do you want from this pet and time management with schedules. This pet will be a family member.

I own a large dog and its cost a great deal more for animal care. I have to get a pet sitter, since most kennels won't take him and I can't take him to the RV sites due to restrictions on "dog size".

I prefer Mutts over breeders, yet some really good breeders can "find" the dog you want and its breed to the "temperament" that is right for you. I respect a good breeder that will help you find the "right" dog for you and not just making a buck.

It depends on your lifstyle. Most people with kids try to avoid the unpredictible Chow-Chow. Homes that have a small yard want to stay away from the Jack Russel terrier whom is full with energy. I perfer the Black Lab or the German Shepherd. If you don't have tons of time to spend with a dog, or money then avoid the long haired dogs who need gromming constenly. If you have a large yard, then a lab would be good. Or even in a aparment, unless you have time to spend with a big dog. If you are new to the dog world, and this is your first dog get a dog that does not have a high need. Get a older dog, about a year or older.
Good Luck and Hoped this Helped!!!!

Consider your personality. Are you an active person who would want their dog to go most places with them. Will you have a lot of time to devote to the dog. Stay away from backyard breeders or you may run into major health and temperment concerns. Will someone else help you to take care of your pet. When you select a breed try the humane society or breed specific rescue groups. Also you need to be a very patient person if you get a puppy.

I don't know if you live by yourself or with someone and if you live in a apartment or a house. If you want a big dog or small you have to find one that just suede's your style of live.
