I've had a few stressful weeks at work, and my home situation was stressful too (my gf was taking medicine for breast cancer which made her edgy and depressed, and I broke up the contact with my family). Last week I had a week off from work, to rest, but I got the flu, which ususally happens when I've been experiencing stress).
Since last friday my heart beats very loud, and faster than is usual. I can't sleep because of that. Because of the high heartrate I'm irritable and edgy, and I get angry very easily, which is very unlike me.
I'm very worried I'm having a sort of physical panic attack, and could use some advice on how to deal with it. I've tried cutting down coffee and cigarettes, but that doesn't do the trick.

You should see a doctor to be certain, but it does sound like you're having panic attacks. I've had them and they're not fun, so I sympathize.

Some things that will help--cut out the cigarettes and caffeine.
Get some Bach's "rescue remedy." Available at health food stores.
Breathe slowly and evenly through your nose. Don't be aggressive about it, but try to get your inhale and exhale to be relatively even. (You can count as you inhale, and however long the inhale is, gently exhale for the same number of counts. Don't try to make your inhale a certain length. Just count how long it is and gently exhale for the same number of counts if you can.)
If you sit in a straight backed chair or on a pillow on the floor up against a wall, this will hold your back upright and make the breathing more effective.

You're going to have to face your stress. Consider counseling. Learn meditation. Practice some gentle yoga (look for someplace where they teach restorative yoga. It might seem pretty strange at first, but it really works!)

Develop a support system for you, since you're the support system for your girlfriend and your family isn't a help to you. There are caregivers support groups at a lot of medical centers--check one out!

All of these things take time, so don't plan to do them all at once. But with each thing you do, acknowledge that you're doing something to take care of yourself.

There was a time when I had a panic attack every day. Now I sometimes I have one a year, and not even every year. You can heal yourself--I wish you the best!

Tradition says that a pregnant belly formed like a basketball holds a lady, whilst a soccer form harbors a boy. Boys within the womb are meant to have slower heartbeats than women have. If you're kicked such a lot that you just believe like you are sporting a soccer participant, you'll be; women' kicks are reputed to be extra soft. If you are having a daughter, customized says, your eyes might be bloodshot and your nostril will widen. You'll have a son if an item suspended on a string over your belly rotates counterclockwise; a lady if it is going clockwise.

Please have your Thyroid checked this week for the possibility of hyperthyroidism, known as Graves Disease. You want to see an Endocrinologist, if possible, although your family doctor or an internist will do. The link below has a bulletin board (under Resources) which is very active and is very credible. The questions are answered by well trained people who themselves have Graves and have been successfully treated. If they need more information, there is a panel of medical doctors with whom they confer. Graves is very treatable by medical doctors but not by the herbal remedies found on the Internet. If left untreated, Graves can be serious. Email me if I can answer any questions for you.

Go buy the herb valerian. It is a relaxing herb. Another good relaxant is a combination of Calcium & Magnesium, known as Cal-Mags. Get a formula with twice as much calcium as magnesium. This is good at relaxing you, too.
Two other supplements good for stress include Ginseng, & B Complex 100 vitamins.
