The size of hand luggage is restricted to no larger than 22" long x 17½" wide x 9" deep. (This is LHR restriction, but you need to check with the airline you're travelling with, as their's may be different. The size limit is usually shown on the ticket folder). As for items you can carry, at the moment it's still no liquids (and this includes mascara), although you can purchase drinks, etc., in the Duty Free area after the Security checkpoint. It's best to check on the website below before travelling for any up to the minute changes.

well when we got there we were allowed hand luggage - just no liquids! gutted wish i had checked.

One bag. That includes your purse. All must fit in one carry on bag. I had to cram my purse inside my carry on, otherwise it would of been two bags, a no no.
And of course, you know about the liquids and all that jazz. I did not know lip balm was a liquid. It was all a learning experience.....Don't pack anything you really want to keep inside your carry on when it comes to liquids. Pack light and easy, so when you are searched.
Flew just 3 weeks ago from London the the USA. And I was the lucky one to get search. Took over 15 minutes and lost alot of items.

look up baa.com they will tell everything yolu need to know what you can take and what you cant take!

Bag size and volume

What if my bag is bigger, but, because it’s not full, it can be squashed down?
That should be fine – if it can fit into the test boxes around the airport, you will be able to carry it through. But be sure not to overfill the bag so that it will not fit in the gauge.

What if I am travelling with someone – can we carry one bigger bag between us?
No, I am sorry. It is one bag per person and they must both be of the regulation size or less.

Can I take a handbag and a piece of hand luggage?
Your handbag does count as the single item of cabin baggage, unless you put it in your cabin bag.

Why are the bag sizes slightly smaller (55cms x 45cms x 20cms) at Stansted and Southampton Airport?
Good question. Although the Government has set the maximum size, some airlines have decided on slightly smaller dimensions due to the limited space in the aircraft. The smaller bag sizes only apply to Flybe at Southampton and all airlines at Stansted (except MaxJet and EOS).

The current state of heightened security in the UK is unprecedented, so I can understand your concerns regarding your flight. We are strictly regulated by the Department for Transport who have always had procedures in place for us to follow to ensure adequate aviation security. We have processes in place for searching and screening both passengers and their luggage prior to their entry to restricted areas - this also includes screening of the catering provisions. In addition, there are stringent procedures for screening all our employees prior to joining the airport’s workforce. These procedures are constantly reviewed, especially in such situations as the current security alert.

Yes, you can still padlock it, or use a combination lock. Luggage that is checked in the USA must either be left unlocked or locked with a special padlock approved by the TSA. Your carrier will be able to give you further details.
