I used Adobe Photoshop to restore some old pics (sepia, oval and raised in the middle from the 1800's(?) that had been through a few hurricanes) and they came out BEAUTIFULLY.
I would recommend it for any photo restoration.

Unless you know a few things about photoshopping or if you know someone else who does that, I suggest you bring it to a professional. About 8 years ago, before all these computer programs, I had a picture of my grandfather restored and it cost me close to $100 for an 8x10! Things are a lot cheaper now due to the increasing technology, so don't worry. I know places like CVS and Walmart can restore pictures pretty well, while also putting them on things like mugs, decks of cards, etc. You could also possibly get a black and white picture put into color, although the colors won't be exact. Good luck and I hope your mother enjoys her present!

PS Studio. Photograph the old photo and with the tools, you can remove the scratches, discolourtion and in some cases, almost renew them. Excellent system...............
