I have tried to punish my little terror again and again-he bites and scratches, loves to chew wires in two, also loves to shred toilet paper, etc., etc. I live very close to both a busy road and interstate, so keeping him outside would be too risky (though he tends to sneak out the door anyway). We had him neutered and I was told that would slow him down, but that hasn't happened. Any advice on how to prevent him from misbehaving would be greatly appreciated.

Cats don't understand punishment like dogs do. Once they have a habit, you can't get them to stop doing it through punishment.

You have to do things like give him something else to shred or scratch. Scratching is what cats do, it's natural and keeps their claws sharp. You can't expect him not to scratch things, but you can give thim things that you approve of him scratching.

It sounds like he's bored. Get him a bunch of diffferent toys to play with. If you only have a toy or two for him, it's not enough. Cats are like kids... they get bored playing with the same thing over and over. If it's at all possible, get another cat for him to play with.

The chewing wires in two is a bad habit, though, because he can hurt himself that way if there's electricity running through the cord. In that case, you might want to try coating your wires with a pepper spray or some such thing where it will taste BAD the next time he chews on a wire. If he gets a taste in his mouth that he doesn't like each time he chews, he'll eventually stop chewing.

And the toilet paper shredding is a common kitty entertainment. There's just something about it that they find fun. In that instance, you might just want to hide the toilet paper. :)

Good luck!

I have the same problem with my kitten. He's the same way. Maybe he's theething. Get him some toys to play with. And if he does something you dont like , try spraying him with water. It's not cruel , but it will let him know that is wrong. And when he plays rough. Just give him a toy and walk away . About the outside thing. Pick him up and hold him when you open the door. That what I do with my kitten . Good luck , hope this will help.

That may seem like misbehaving to you but trust me on this one,, that's just his nature. He's a rambunctious cat,, sounds funny! It's best to let young cats be themselves, and have fun,, that way they grow up confident,, and happier. It occurs to me to that what would be a good thing for him would be another cat his age to play with,, then the could play until they get tired and leave your TP alone.. C.

you can teach a cat like a dog they can and will learn new tricks. for a misbehaving cat try a spray bottle of water. every time your cat does something wrong give him a spray of water. cats hate water and will soon learn to assiocate the water with the bad behavior and will stop

have you tried playing with your kitten? they do get bored especially being stuck inside the house...so I guess they appreciate spending time with them & playing with them often.
