Hi, I am looking into buying a violin for a very special friend of mine, whose current one is developing cracks. So, I am asking...what are good makes of violins (full size-and with the bow, case etc), the different models, and also approximate pricings (if possible-ballpark figures are fine-in AUS dollars preferably too thanks). And one more thing...what would the quality of a violin under $1000 be like? Thanks everyone for your help-it is greatly appreciated.
P.S. It is to be her birthday present...so shhhh :P

The quality of a violin under $1000 can be fine but varies significantly from instrument to instrument. My favourite violin was handed down to me from my great-grandmother and is a copy of a Stradivarius (German-made violin). Please go to a music store, pawn shop, or somewhere you can take someone along with you to try out an instrument. Your friend or teacher who knows about music can help you try out various instruments and select the one with the best tone quality within your price range. You want to hear how the violin sounds, this is what is most important, not how it looks. Good luck!

think of a random time to ask her how long her arm is. she has to be able to grab the scroll of a violin if it fits her. or you could ask her what size her violin is saying that you might want to start or that you want a new one. you can find a case that is her favorite color or something with a keychain attatched to it. if she complains about something about her violin, buy her one that doesnt have that.
