Does anybody know how to find out if a man is lying about being a Vietnam veteran? He claims to have been airborne, green beret, and a sniper with 50+ kills. None of us here at work believe him.

I can save you the time. You want to know if a man is lying? Are his lips moving? I started the Virginia Chapter of the Viet Nam Veterans, after the first year I made everyone (87) bring in their DD214 (tells where they were, what they were and what they actually did along with what awards they received). I had 6 guys who had never been in the service; 11 who had never been in country and only 16 combat vets). I quit and have never looked back!

Ask to see his DD214 when he tells you he does not have it follow these instructions go to http://www.archives.gov/veterans/military-service-records/get-service-records.html then you can request it on line at their web page; fax it or write them. If after you receive his DD214 you need awards and medals download a Form SF 180 Requests Pertaining to Military Records, http://www.archives.gov/veterans/military-service-records/replacement-medals.html complete it and send to one of the following:

Bureau of Naval Personnel (Navy, Coast guard and Marines)
Liaison Office Room 5409
9700 Page Avenue
St. Louis, MO 63132-5100

National Personnel Records Center (Air Force)
Air Force Reference Branch (NRPMF)
9700 Page Avenue
St. Louis, MO 63132-5100

National Personnel Records Center (Army)
Medals Section (NRPMA-M)
9700 Page Avenue
St. Louis, MO 63132-5100

Note: If he is what I think he is, you would be smart to get him out of your life. If he had to lie to you he has a problem and if he is lying now what about later?

God Bless You and The Southern People. (Did I tell you I am the last surviving Civil War Veteran :-) )?

It's like this in every aspect of life. People always exaggerate their accomplishments and many have an illness in which they feel a need to lie. The military is a great place for liars and exaggerators. Those people who lie and exaggerate to the extreme have no conscience when it comes to that stuff. I have spoken with many Iraqi vets and I keep my identity a secret, then I watch as their story goes from them being a admin Marine to being a war hero. It is amazing what many will make themselves out to be. It's not just a Vietnam thing, there are many liars and exaggerators in todays military as well. A deployment to the middle east does to mean you have been through battle and are a hardened warrior, but yet many will try to tell you otherwise. It's very easy to fool those who do not know any better.

type his first and last name like this "first last" or even with out quotes into google. if he is/was military then it will most likely come up on something. i've used this to find quite a few vets out there for various purposes....it may seem outlandish to you, but who are you to call him a phony? i hope you and your work buddies are ready with a big fat apology if you find he is telling the truth! you'd be surprised at some of the stories you hear from any vet, but vietnam has alot of strange stories and nothing was normal!

No sniper has ever recorded 50+ sniper kills...I've been a scout/sniper in the USMC for years...Best thing to do is ask for details and then catch him in a lie...as him who is CO was. Don't let him give you the "Classified" BS. You could ask him for his paperwork but chances are he'll say he's lost it or it's in his safety deposit box and inaccessible. As him about his unit...where he went to sniper school, what type of weapon he used...what it's muzzle velocity was...write all of this info down and verify it with him that you've written it down correctly...then go on to the web and look up that particular weapon...every sniper knows his weapons...everything about them...and will never forget this information. Chances are he'll clam up and not talk about it...then you know you've got a liar on your hands. I think there's a web site out there something like stolen valor or something to check on vietnam vets... good luck in rooting out the jerk.

Most people don't "brag" about it, that is very true, but in any case, a LIBERAL has no business at all with another person's records of any kind for very obvious reasons. Liberals seek to tear down those who disagree with them. If they were to find that what they sought to discredit was fact, they would simply shrug their shoulders and do what they should do at all times anyway: shut up!

If you don't believe him...ask him right out for his DD-619...It's basically his "military transcripts". If he is what he says he is...you lost the best friend in your life you possibly ever could have by questioning-or doubting him. I'd buy him a cup of coffee, shake his hand, and thank him instead. He is lieing.
Ask to see his discharge paper. Ask why he doesn't go to the VA. Ask what bridage regiment, etc. he was in. Army Special Forces (aka Green Berets) range from Army 1St Special Forces, to 5th. Ask him details like what zone did you operate. Ask him when he was in countrey. ask when he went "boots on ground".
But trust me, he is lieing.
Ask if he was special forces, or if he was in the "Rangers" (who were 80% not airbone, due to "in Country" (refering to Vietnam) training) or if he was a "SOG" troop (survey and obervation group. A super black ops in cambodia).

Chris C, is correct. Any verteran of any service will know what their DD-619 form is. They all spend atleast 4 years waiting for them, regardless of wether they love their or choose to re-up.

Plus, only like 3 people had that many confirmed sniper kills during the vietnam era.
