Loss of job, family member, friend, spouse, divorce, terminal or serious illness and a world full of hatred without enough strength.

If you are talking about major depression, probably a genetic predisposal to depression as well as a variety of enviromental factors leading changes in the thought process and eventually a possible chemical imbalance in the brain.

Sometimes depression is a result of another psychiatric illness such as a psychotic episode, anxiety disoders or part of bipolar disorder the causes are still unknown although there are plenty of theories.

Your question is very specific as to the most frequent cause... I was diagnosed with clinical depression and have been on my meds for more than 10 years. Clinical depression is chemical- an imbalance of serotonin levels, it is not because of sadness or extreme situations, it is a whole plethora of things. Anxiety disorder, etc... to try and say "snap out of it " to a person who suffers from depression only makes it worse. I do agree that there are organic reasons in addition to inorganic ones; also know that half the time when an individual has depression they,
# 1- have a thyroid imbalance... # 2- a suppressed immune system, prone to bacterial infections more than the average person.

A chemical in balance in the body, like when your serotonin levels are out of whack... Also, females are more prone to depression than males... Lack of exercise and (believe it or not), lack of sunshine (light) which provides essential vitamin D...Some people get REALLY depressed in the winter months, for that reason alone...(Dark, gloomy, rainy days...)

I've been on an anti-depressant for over 10 years... I'm SO tired of taking it, but it DOES work... (Brand name: Zoloft)

If you feel sad FREQUENTLY, then you shouldn't fool around: go talk to a doctor. Depression is a potentially fatal disorder. If you feel hopelessness, loss of interest in regular activities (that sort of thing), get yourself to a mental heath professional. They have meds that can help you feel more normal. You are not alone. A whole bunch of people have it...

Here is a website that should have many answers to your question:

National Institute of Mental Health
(Publications on Depression )
http://www.nimh.nih.gov/publicat/pubListing.cfm?dID=6

Hope this helps...Good luck!

wow, i don't think there is any way to determine it. There are so many different causes of depression, and often there are multiple causes in just one person. I mean, theres chemical imbalances, loss of a loved one, abuse, constant pessimism, there are just to many. In my opinion though, i think that most cases of depression have a natural hereditary chemical imbalance to it becauset that increases chances of depression incredibly. There is no sure answer for this question, i'm pretty sure of that, but i stand by my opinion.

The depression that is litteraly caused by an event is called situational depression, it's often caused by life trauma or overwhelming stress, - nasty divorce, spliting up with loved one, family problems, health condition etc.

No, it's loneliness. That's the no 1 killer cause. Surround yourself with people, be jolly! However, don't go to the other extreme, you don't want to suffocate. Find a way to balance social life with the time for yourself.
