chlorophyll..It's the substance that makes leaves, pine needles, grass, certain algaes, any green plants, green.

I was also told by a natural scientist once that plants almost have to be green because the sky is mostly blue, and sunlight is yellow. There was a much longer explanation to it than that, but that was the short version.
