I am looking for a product that is inexpensive, can be put in dry or wet hair, doesnt leave the hair looking wet, doesn't leave the hair feeling crunchy. Is there a product out there? i have tried so many products, cheap and expensive. what do you suggest?

I think you probably need a sculpting (or texture) cream, not a gel. It will sculpt your hair the way you want it to be without wet appearance or crunchy feeling (every gel's qualities).
"Bad Head", or Redken sculpting creams are all good.
Sebastian's cream, as mentioned above, is good too/ I didn't know it can be found for $7. Very nice price for that product/

I have been in long and spiky hair before. In order for me to style up my hair as I like, normally I will use 2 products from the same brand - Gatsby (Japanese product). As usual, I will sprinkle a little bit of water on my hair and start putting Gatsby Super Hard Gel Water (like a bottle). Don't put too much because you still need to apply Gatsby Styling Clay (hexagon shape). And then you can start to create your own style of your day. And you know what, just do once in the morning and you still can restyle your hair in the evening without using the products again. Woohooo... it's very cost-saving. I have been using this products for 2-3 years. And I find it very useful and makes me looks good all the time. The most important is it makes me confident when communicating with friends or others.

Putting a product in dry hair will result in crunchy hair. If you must put the product in dry hair, mix it with water in your hands before applying it.
A wet, crunchy look usually results from uneven distribution, so be sure to spread it all through your hair, not just one area. Using too much product also results with a crunchy "wet look".

It's kind of important to know what you're trying to do with the gel when you ask that question. :)
That said, Sebatian's Shaper cream is about 7 bucks at the drugstore and works fabulously in wet or dry hair to retain shape.
