As every one else has pointed out there are alot of places to eat from many street vendors to the many restaurants. And yes, some of them are flavored for western tastes. Cause I cannot read the names of some of the places I have eaten. It seems you have some concerns with regards to sanitation and the quality of the food.

I can steer you this way. At many of the malls and office buildings there are food courts, where you buy some scrip and pay for the food and sit and eat. Then you can redeem the scrip for cash for what you don't use. Depending on you appetite and volume of food you eat, you could use 100 to 400 baht. I would go early to one of these food courts, like MBK's or Emporium or follow a group of thai business people around 11:30 and watch where they go. See what they eat, find which are popular and pick a couple dishes. They usually have pictures of the food. Since the dishes are 60-120 baht it is not very expensive and you can sample what may appeal to you palate. I have eaten with friends there in a few malls and the food is quite good and I have never been sick. Though I sometimes think I have a cast iron stomach.

Ah, what also comes to mind is K's Restaurant, it is many malls and they have a Shabu-Shabu style type food prep. You pick the type of food you want to cook and you do it. It is quite good and it is a good small group meal and can be quite cheap.

Another place, Black Canyon Coffee, serves wonderful fruit drinks, coffee at a reasonable price and their food plates are great. You can get a lunch for like 200 baht or less.

Sometimes I think whatever you restaurant you eat at in Bangkok, you are eating authentic Thai food. Why? Cause the Thai alter to their tastes. Change some of the vegetables, sauces, etc. to their tastes. Sound familiar? Well, when you think about it, many of the restaurants do cater to tourists and it is a lot of money to the owners but, they still have to make rent and cater to Thai tastes and cannot spend too much time nor money finding authentic ingredients. It's not much different than eating at a Japanese restaurant in the United States or UK or a Chinese restaurant or maybe a Italian restaurant outside their themed countries. When you look at it this way, it does not matter where you eat cause you get to enjoy how the owner redefines a dish you thought you knew. LOL It ends up being an education on the tastes of the Thai people. Like anywhere in the world, some like it hot, some like it cold, some like it not so spicy and some like it very spicy.

In case you wondered. I like it spicy, I love the diversity of flavors in Thailand.

Good eating and enjoy it.

Do you want good authentic thai food or tourist thai food? Go where the Thai people eat on the street stands for authentic.

Also, good thai for tourists is on Silom---called Bug and Bee. Just west of Rama 4. I'll be in BKK on Wednesday and my first meal will be there. See you then!

You'll get real Thai anywhere in the city... in millions of places. Most Thais eat from roadside food vendors. Going to a restaurant, you may end up getting Thai food which has been altered to be more Western. I believe they call this "fusion food".

Say "Pet mak mak" if you want really spicy food.
