Yes and No. The best thing for the puppies is to be with mommy BUT you also need to protect them. This sort of thing happens all the time with big dogs. You can really upset her by takeing them away. My advice is to let her have supervised visits with the puppies. Don't leave them alone with her but watch her around them so you can stop her from stepping or rolling over on them. The best thing for puppies is to have thier mothers milk. Next time you go to breed try buying a whelping box that has bars going across it. This lets the puppies crawl under there and stops mom from rolling over on them. It won't stop it 100% BUT it can help reduce the deaths.

I used to know a St Bernard breeder. He told me that moms stepping on pups has always been a problem. They do take the pups, but put the pups with the mom for feeding. The pups do need to be kept warm. A heating pad, where they can't chew it, is a good idea for the first 2 weeks.

When I was a kid some jerk down the street has a litter of puppies and they were gonna kill them, but my aunt being an animal lover was able to save one of the pups, she fed him every two hours (i was only 4 so i don't remember what she fed him) she made him a little bed with a hot water bottle to keep him warm, and a wind up tick tock clock (sounds like a heart beat) and put in with him. That is what you could do if you st.barnard can't take care of them herself. But I agree with the other one give her supervised visit and watch her very closely so the pups can nurse.
Sorry to hear about you lost. Good luck

I'm so sorry to hear that, how sad. Of course you didn't do anything wrong.
You can place the puppies on her and supervise while they nurse. Or, you can bottle feed. They will need to be kept warm but I wouldn't leave them with her after what has happened.
My husband built our breeding box with a "lip" around the inside to prevent our female (doberman and german shepherd) from accidentally doing the same thing. We were fortunate as none of our puppies were injured by their mothers.
Hopefully your remaining puppies will survive with your help. The best of luck to you.

so sorry for your loss...first time mom? did you use a whelping box? with ledges for the pups to slide under when mom tries to lie down. all new litters should be watched 24/7 for the first 2 weeks if at all possible. when not , have a proper whelping box to help avoid this. also this is very common dont be mad at her she is sad too. sometimes a real large place is good for a giant breed so mom can lay far from them. i just had a litter of great danes... i know your pain... good luck with the two. they HAVE to be with mom... watch her and move fer feet or the pups when ever needed.

No, the only thing you did wrong.......was wait so long.
You can always put them to the teat every 2 to 3 hours, or try a bottle and puppy formula.
I would not trust her with the last 2 babies until they are much older, if ever!
You have your work cut out for you, good luck with the last 2.

i sure hope ur St. Bernard did this on accident... u did the right thing by taking the other 2 babies away, but don't forget to give them lots of warm milk and pay a lot of attn. to them- keep them warm, cuddle them, etc. take all 3 to the vet and talk to the vet about ur situation- he/she can give u better advice than anyone on here. good luck, though!!
