Actually, you did not say if you were talking about wine, or red and white. So:
RED spagetti sauce goes with pasta.
WHITE alfredo sauce goes with pasta.
RED strawberry sauce goes with ice cream.
RED tomato soup goes great with WHITE milk and crackers.
WHITE cream goes with RED raspberries.
RED peppers go good on a pizza, so do RED pepperonis
RED icing goes on Xmas sugar cookies.
RED marachino cherries go in fruit cake
WHITE Cool Whip goes on pumpkin pie
RED mellocreme candies go on Valentine cupcakes.
OK, that's enough. LOL, it is 2am here, really 3 am with the clock turning back, I'm tired. And goofey, I just got off work.
Actually, a full bodied burgundy goes best with steaks that have a little grease or spice in them, or are served with spicy condiments, like a prime rib, which has a spice rub on it, and is served with horseradish sauce. If you serve red, the taste of the condiment might drown out the taste of the wine.
And there is the rule, the spicier/stronger tasting the dish, the stronger the flavor of the wine should be. A sweeter dish, with a sweeter wine. Wine is supposed to compliment the dish, not have the dish drown out the wine, or vice versa. A plain pork roast, cooked in it's own juices, white. A pork roast with a fruited baste or sauce, chablis, pink or white.
An earthy dish, like with mushrooms, choose an earthy wine.
Hope this is what you were asking for.

This is not cheating. This is the rule I go by.
Although there are many classes of wines, they are all used under six specific classes. Theses main classes of wines include aperitif (or better known as appetizer wines), red dinner wines, white dinner wines, sparkling wines, table wine and dessert wines.
The most popular dinner wines are the red, white and sparkling wines. These wines are very popular because they are made to be drunk with food. They are also known as light wines because they only contain approximately 10-14alcohol. The other aperitif and dessert wines are richer and sweeter than the light wines and also contain 14-20alcohol. These wines have been fortified to make them stronger.
Aperitif (Appetizer Wines)
These wines include Dry sherry, Madeira, vermouth and other flavored wines made to be drunk before eating a meal.
Red Dinner Wines
These wines are usually dry, meaning they are without sugar. These go extremely well with main-course dishes. For full effect, red wines should be served at a cool room temperature to bring out their aroma.
Another classification of red wines is the rose wines. These are also better known as the pink dinner wines. They go well with almost any dish.
White Dinner Wines
These wines are usually either very dry or rather sweet.
Sparkling Wines
These wines are totally different from other types of wine. Unlike the others, they contain bubble of carbon dioxide, as do the soft drinks. To have this effect, the wine ferments in an open container. These are usually served at any meal with any course. These are most frequently served at banquets, formal dinners and weddings.
Table Wines
Light wine is fermented grape juice whose alcohol content falls within a certain range defined by law. Furthermore, table wine is not bubbly. Unless a wine has more than 14 percent alcohol, which usually means that extra alcohol has been added, or it has bubbles, it is a table wine or a light wine.
Dessert Wines
These wines are only classified under Dessert wines because they are sometimes served with desserts.
If you want examples my favorite white wine is a vintaged Chateau Le Salle and my favorite red wine is Blackstone Merlot
