I swore when the bottled waters started getting popular, I would not be a customer, dollars for a few ounces for the same thing I get out of the tap, dollars for cubic feet of the stuff, no way. But sorry to say, I am a customer. Our water here comes out of the MIssissippi River, and tastes strong. I do not drink it, unless it is made into tea, coffee, or whathaveyou.
The bottled water has a milder taste, and I will drink it straight. I buy the cheap stuff, and I used to drive by the plant where they filter and bottle it everyday, so I know it comes out of the same river! But the filtering does remove some of the bad taste, I keep a bottle on the sink in the bathroom for the late night thirsties, and have compared it with the tap water.
There is a taste difference, it just depends on the source of the water, spring water, mineral water, lake or river water, and what area of what country it comes from, what minerals it [naturally] has in it.

Taste really depends on the source of the water and the brand (and how they process/bottle it). Some water is just regular tap water that has been purified, some is actually from springs but has still been processed, and some comes from natural underground artesian wells (which is usually also processed, though artesian groundwater tends to be naturally pure anyway). The taste of the water depends on what minerals has been added to it and how oxygenated it is. Sodium is commonly added, as well as various other things. Some waters taste really distinct to me while others taste just like the water that comes out of my tap at home.
My favorite is SmartWater, it comes in a really long bottle. It just tastes really nice and crisp and clean to me, kind of sweet almost. I kind of like Dasani but hate it at the same time, the taste is really weird but it's easy to find so oh well.

I love spring water. It is all I will drink. I have to agree with the other answerer on the french sparkling water. Evian and Volvic are my absolute favorites. It seems like now everywhere you go there is Disani or that other nasty one sold by pepsi or coke. Don't drink those they are really nasty. In France you can find so many great waters. The French will usually drink a different brand every week because they come from different springs and contain varied mineral content. It is actually quite brilliant for good health.

Contrary to what you see during a toothpaste commercial, we Do Not need Fluoride for better teeth, in fact, it's actually Unhealthy in more than one way. Why am I mentioning fluoride as an answer to your bottled water question? Because many bottled water companies actually add fluoride to their water. Bottled water that has been through a process called "Reverse Osmosis" should not have any fluoride in it and is considered healthier. (Just read the label)
Just a little note:
Nazis used to put large amounts of fluoride into the water at their concentration camps. Do you think they did that because they were concerned about healthy teeth?

I'm a spring water connoiseur.
The best spring water in the world is the Perrier, from France.
It has an excellent taste and it is also low in sodium.
It's carbonated in origin byt the way.
The best still spring water in the world is Evian, also from France.
Another excellent ones are San Pellegrino from Italy and Villavicencio from Argentina.
The weirdest spring water I ever tasted is called "Agua de Vichy", which is from Cataluña, Spain. It has about 1300 ppm of sodium and it tastes like sea water.

Most bottled water comes from a city system. Read the labels. They just run it through a bottling plant. I don't think there is a noticeable taste difference.

I like Nestle brand from Walmart or Sams. It has enough added minerals, etc it's like gatorade without the flavoring.
