If you feel your relationship with your BF is a good one and are willing to work for it, you could offer to take the dog to basic training classes yourself this will help both with the dogs behavior and become a bonding process for you and the dog, there is no such thing as a "bad dog" just bad owners, offer to either help him bath the dog or suggest he take it to a groomer and have it done, the only time a dog should smell bad is when he's wet, or just really dirty, the odor could be from his food, his bedding (if not kept clean) or a physical problem such as ear mites, infections, etc. good luck and give the dog a chance you just might be surprised when you see the difference a little time and patience could make.

Just tell him. The dog probably does not listen to you because you yell at him, and sorry, but dogs do smell and baths only do so much. I, personally, would have already showed you the door, but then I don't let anyone yell at my children or my dogs. Oh, in case you do decide to tough it out with him, count your blessings, German Shepherds are not that bad. I had an English Mastiff, a Bull Mastiff and a pitt bull when I met my husband. He never said anything bad about them, but I know he was not too happy about having to buy a king sized bed so that all five of us could sleep comfortably. He was also not real happy about having to help my dog into our bed as the dog got older, and no lighter(260lbs). Oh, and smell is nothing compared to a mastiffs drooling problem!!

Well if my girl didn't want to be around my dog, I would show her the door. I think you should be frank with him. And if he's smart he'll follow my example. I'm not trying to be mean, I would say the same thing if the situation was reversed. Although you may mention to your BF to give the dog a bath and change of food (food allergies cause bad smell) other than that the dog won't listen to you because he doesn't respect you. When you raise your voice the dog thinks of you as a child and immoderately refuses to respect you. You have to have authority in your voice. Dogs follow a calm, assertive leader. And yes, you are abusing your BF's best friend.
Edit: One thing you could also offer to do is give the dog a bath. Take him in the bathroom and give him a nice warm bath. Just make sure and dry him well as it's getting colder out.

'I on the other hand can't stand her' - you actually wrote that on a public board? How insensitive .... just what the poor guy needs right now, a high-maintenance "Me,Me!" gf. If I were you I'd pack before he assists you in doing so. You have already been told the correct way to handle this. Both of you take the dog for her next check up and you listen while he asks what can be done to make her life better and what would be signs that her quality of life was ebbing too low.

Got a special occasion coming up soon? Maybe buy your boyfriend a session in a training class for him and the dog. The dog will be much more tolerable if he can learn to listen and get some basic commands down.

Try not yelling but speeking in a very low voice and very sturnly. That is what we are told to do at work. As for the smell, I can't help you there. Maybe you and your b/f should set down and have a heart to heart about this dog.

You need to be honest. What kind of relationship can you have if you can't tell him everything. Just tell him, come to an agreement about the dog. If the relationship is strong, it will survive anything, if not, it's not worth dragging out.
