is there any special care or special product? i would like to grow it out really really long, and every time it gets to the top of my rear the ends start to shred. i don't straighten it that often. i was also wondering what the BARE MINIMUM amount of hair i could trim off every month it so it would be more healthy when it gets to where i want it to be this time.

If you want hair to grow faster, you have to take supplements that work on your body chemistry to support hair's growth and strength at its genesis.....once it has grown out, it is just dead keratin
Try GNC, they make a supplement called "Nourishair" in formulas for men and women..they are HUGE pills and you have to take 2 daily. There is also a "Hair skin and nails" formula from Andrew Lessman that you can google, that has great ingredients and is easier to swallow, made by ProCaps labs. You can also take large doses of Biotin, sometimes called Vitamin H, take no less than 2500 micrograms daily to support healthy hair growth. IT may take 6 to 8 weeks to see results.

If you want to grow your hair long, grow it healthy as well.

First prevent the birth of split ends by:

1. Use Tresemme's Anti-Breakage Shampoo and Conditioner
2. Use a Heat Tamer (I use Tresemme! :) ) Spray if you iron/curl your hair.
3. Never brush your hair when its wet. Use a wide tooth comb.
4. Don't use rubberbands that are tight-tight. (Use scrunchies thats even better)
5. Towl dry your hair before you blow-dry, and use a cool setting on your blowdryer.
6. Take a daily multi-vitaman for healthy hair.

cut a 1/2 inch per 3-4 months would be good.

Everyone here has givin great advice, you want long hair, then you have to keep it healthy. I also advise to use leave in conditioner, and use baby shampoo every other day, so that you don't destroy all the oils your hair needs. Vitamins and veggies and water.
