I always wondered why a litter of puppies have different colors of yarn around their neck? I see it in pictures all the time. Is it to tell what order they were born or what?

I used the same for Jenna's litter of 9 pups... most looked identical sooo it was easier for me to figure out how each of them were doing.
I think its a great thing for ANYONE breeder or not to do with they litter of pups or kittens for that matter.
I had to help Jen feed her pups with a bottle cause she was having a hard time with keeping up with them at times. I had a chart by her whelping box that I had the pups labelled with the weights and such and how much I fed them.

Colored yarn definetly made my life easier :)

It is to keep track of who is who. Good breeders will use a certain set of colors for all their litters (the same color set) and will use color to maintain what order they were born, and then will weigh them and keep a chart to make sure everybodys gaining. They can also sometimes tell a general adult weight by the weight and age of the pups.

That is to tell which is which in the litter. Serious breeders keep track of weights by the colors. The cats that I helped with last done red white and blue. Red was frist, white was second, and blue was third. I hope that helps you some.

Yes. You got it exactly. You can also do it if some of the pups have been sold, so you can remember which pup goes to who.
