Sodom and Gomorrah were completely destroyed!
As it is written in the Bible:
Gensis 19:24-25 (KJV): Then the Lord rained upon Sodom and upon Gomorrah brimstone and fire from the Lord out f heaven;
(v25): And he overthrew those cities, and all the plain, and all the inhabitants of the cities, and that which grew upon the ground.

Those cities were destroyed by God for gross sexual misconduct. ZeroCool says Sodom and Gomorrah were not destroyed because of homosexuality. If that was the case, why would the Bible mention the people who wanted to rape Lot's two male visitors? At Gen. 19:4, it says that the would-be rapists were "from boy to old man, all the people in one mob".
The word "sodomy" comes from the name Sodom. Basically, it means homosexual copulation. So, those two cities and the surrounding District were destroyed because of their homosexual activities.

Zacharia Sitchin (Author of The 12th Planet) says his research shows the biblical description of the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah matches almost exactly to a nuclear explosion. His theory is extraterrestrials (the Bible's "Angels") caused the destruction.

According to the Bible, it was destroyed. What most people DON'T know is that it WASN'T destroyed because of "homosexuality".
"What was the sin of Sodom? Abuse and offense against strangers. Insult to the travelers. Inhospitality to the needy. Rape."
Ezekiel 16:48-49 states, “This was the sin of your sister Sodom: She and her daughters were arrogant, overfed and unconcerned; they did not help the poor and needy.” The sin of the Sodomites was that they refused to take in the needy travelers.

God destroyed them as a punishment for their sin.
I don't have anything to back this up with but I was told by a freind of mine who went to bible school and became a pastor and the whole deal that there is an area of land where S&G may have been that is completely barren to this day.
