The Qur'an does not allow anyone to harm those who are leaving in peace, no matter what religion they hold on to. This principle has been clearly stated in the Qur'an as follows:
[Thus, if they let you be, and do not make war on you, and offer you peace, God does not allow you to harm them.] (An-Nisaa' 4:90)
In pursuance of this policy, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) issued clear directives to his soldiers never to disturb those who are engaged in any form of worship. The policy of living and letting others to live is firmly enshrined in the following verses:
[Say: O disbelievers! I do not worship what you worship, Nordo you worship what I worship. ... to you your religion, and to me, mine.] (Al-Kafirun 109:1-3, 6)
In full conformity with the above teachings, neither the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) nor any of the four rightly guided caliphs who succeeded him were in the habit of hunting down people and executing them for merely changing their religions. Rather, they refrained from doing so except in rare cases involving treason. Treason, however, is another matter. The punishment for treason in the Qur'an is as strict as it is in the Hebrew Bible. But it must never be confused with mere change of religion.

In Islamic law (sharia), apostasy is punishable by death, yes. However, the original reason for this wasn't to deter Muslims from converting to other religions. The origin was when Muhammed ran into Arabic Jews. These Jews were initially in awe of Muhammed's teachings. After a while, they became bored of Islam, and decided to go back to Judaism. Muhammed commanded death to those who converted to Islam, and then left.

Not all muslim scholors agree that there is death for apostacy in Islam. It is actually going against freedom of religion given in the Quran .
What Quran says about those leaving faith
"O ye who believe! if any from among you turn back from his Faith, soon will Allah produce a people whom He will love as they will love Him,- " Quran 5: 54.
"Those who believe, then reject faith, then believe (again) and (again) reject faith, and go on increasing in unbelief,- Allah will not forgive them nor guide them nor guide them on the way." Quran 4:137.
Quran only says he will not be forgiven and will not be guided if he repeatedly believes and disbelieve. How can a person repeatedly disbelieve if there is death for apostasy ?
In circumstance of self defensive war, if a muslim turns into side of enemies, then he should be killed. When members of an army suddenly started helping the enemies, what do modern day armies do ? They just executes them. Similarly in the Islam's self defensive wars there were hypocrites who took to the sides of enemy and they were executed

i didn't find anything in the Quran regarding this. however i found it in the Bible
"And that prophet, or that dreamer of dreams, shall be put to death; because he hath spoken to turn you away from the LORD your God..." (Deuteronomy 13: 5)
"And Israel joined himself unto Baalpeor: and the anger of the Lord was kindled against Israel. And the Lord said unto Moses, 'Take all the heads of the people and hang them up before the Lord against the sun, that the fierce anger of the Lord may be turned away from Israel.'" (Numbers 25:3-4)

Death, damnation, idle threats, what's the difference. I tried reading the Koran at the library once, but after being told five or six times that I was going to hell, I put it back on the shelf.
