i've never heard of this one before...and i'm native american. to become a recognized native in the u.s.a., you have to have blood relative proof of tribal affiliation...parents, grandparents, siblings, cousins, etc., enrolled with a federally recognized tribe...baptismal records, birth certificate or established paternity. one can however, in very rare cases, be adopted into a tribe. you have to live with that tribe for a specific number of years, and do some pretty damned good deeds and be an upstanding member of the community. then the tribal council votes on whether or not to accept the person as a tribal member. it doesn't happen too often that i know of. in some cases, the apache, pima, and papago tribes have relational tribes in mexico. perhaps if the person can prove heritage in one of those tribes, they might get tribal enrollment. contact the bureau of indian affairs on line...www.bia.com

footnote:
yes mrs b, i have native friends who have been mistaken for "mexicans", and been deported to mexico...it happens in the southwest sometimes.
as to jaread...what the hell are you talking about? have you ever spent any "real" time on a rez? we do have tribal "welfare" programs, we do (unfortunately) have some wild-azz parties, rapes, and everything else you can think of that happens in "the real world." most native ppl are friendly with ppl from mexico. i find it offensive that you consider yourself to be "indian by choice," and make native "artifact" craftworks. if you sell them, shame on you...it takes a lot away from the real native craftspeople who sell their art for a living. by all means, go visit wounded knee...while you're there, say a few words for my relations who are buried in that pit grave. i am a lakota.
