Be clear and firm...

Say you dont want to be rude and you wouldnt mind being friends... but there simply were no sparks.

Its always best to be direct

Tell him/her exactly what you put in your question. You don't even need to add anything. Don't drag it out. Don't make a promise you really don't want to keep; that'll be leading them on. Don't give them examples of what they did wrong or didn't do right; they'll come back later and say they changed. Just simply say 'We gave it a try, but I prefer to keep our relationship right where it is'. Don't mention there were no sparks. You can mention you can still be friends, but they probably won't want to hear that. You don't have to say you didn't want to be rude, just say you wanted to be honest.
Remember: breaking up is hard to do, but the shorter you've been an item, the easier it is.

Well first of all tell that person how you feel. I'm sure they'll understand and second of all when you tell that person don't break their heart and look on the bright side your not doing anything you don't want to. No seriously just tell him the way you told us " You just want to be friends and nothing more, there simply was no sparks" keep it simple.

Hopefully it doesn't have to be discussed on that first date. When and IF he calls you back for another is the time to be honest and up front; but not rude hopefully.

If he asks you out for a second date, while still on the first, and you don't want to face the issue right then, say "We'll see, we can talk on the phone (or email) later".

What you need to do is just tell him/her that you had a fantasic time on your date but youre not ready to settle down just yet! Tell them that you had a great time at the date but you really need some time alone! In a sense you're being honest right?

If you really want to be friends, you have to rip the bandaid off. Do it asap and do it as kind of a manner possible. Try not to use the whole "Let's be friends" cliche. Maybe suggest a future chance to hang out in a group.

You just need to be honest. Let him know that you do like him as a person and would like to be friends, but you don't feel that you two are a right match for a relationship.

Don't call them.. and if they call you, ignore the calls.. they'll soon get the hint without any dumb explanation. I always find this to be the most painless way all round.
