it is not your throw out bearing becouse that is inside your transaxel and is constily lubed by trans oil, your input shaft is hollow and that is where the shaft that releases the clutch.
the clutch is cable realsed so forget the hydralic setup.
but you need to replace the shifter bushings at the shifter
and the transaxel and this will cure the problem

Sounds like you need to change out your throw out baring it's located in the clutch Assembly, Wail your in their check your actual gears, fly wheel and clutch thou there may be nothing wrong with them it nice to no where you stand as far as the life expectancy of your clutch is, Remember this is a part that is designed to ware just like Brakes and rotors.

If you can shift it OK while at rest, then it is your synchronizing gear. (I mean with the engine off, clutch pedal pushed in.) I would bet that if you were to drain a bit of oil from your trans you would find that it is full of brass.

check or replace ALL of the shift linkage bushings, replacing just one or two will create other problems. go to www.vwparts.com and look up your car and order the kit.

Either your slave cylinder is bad or the 1st and 2nd gear syncros are gone. Pray it's the slave cylinder
