I just wanted to know if this is legal in Texas. I am serious ... you never know when some road rage person may want to fight and I think the Machete will scare them off...

Also don't give me crap about what if the other person has a gun ... if they do I am screwed whether I have the Machete or not!

It is illegal to carry. Bluejulie almost got it right, however she left out the fact that the blade can not be longer than 5 and a half inches. I have never seen a machete shorter than that.

Here is what the Texas Penal Code says about knives.

(6) "Illegal knife" means a:
(A) knife with a blade over five and one-half inches

(B) hand instrument designed to cut or stab another by being thrown

(C) dagger, including but not limited to a dirk, stilletto, and poniard

(D) bowie knife

(E) sword or

(F) spear.

(7) "Knife" means any bladed hand instrument that is
capable of inflicting serious bodily injury or death by cutting or
stabbing a person with the instrument.

So by Texas Penal Code Deffinitions it is a knife, and by the length of it, a Machete is an illegal knife.

Another poster stated that a Machete is a tool not a weapon and therefore not illegal. Not true. I have charged people for having a base ball bat in the vehicle. The base ball bat was laying next to the driver's seat and the driver's door. The person did not have a ball or glove anywhere. After talking to him, he advised tha base ball bat was for protection. So he was charged with having an illegal weapon a "club". Just because the item has another primary use does not make it legal.

The best advise is to stay in your vehicle and drive away. Keep a cell phone in the car to call police. If you feel you have to have protection, get a concealed carry license.

Machete Laws

Here in Mexico, 8 year old kids carry machetes around. So when I am in Mexico, I have a machete in the van where I could hypothetically reach it. When I cross back into Texas, I cover it up, or shove it farther back. I have been doing this for years.

The fact I live right at the border may make a big diffference, the culture in Texas at the border is really different. They worry about AK-47's on full automatic.

In Iowa, that machete would be at the back of the vehicle.

Edit: it is in a scabbard, not laying in the open.

Machete's are tools often used in the the farming/ranching community. So long as it is in its scabbard, and in plain view when an officer approches your vehicle you should bee ok. It is a fine deterant to people walking up to your car at a red light. Just Inform the Officer whenever oyou are pulled over that you have a cutting implement within the passenger compartment of your vehicle, and all should be ok. Tools are not weapons, Unless they are in the proper hands. Then even a spoon can kill.

I live near Texas, It is a southern thing, Other People will never understand it.

I might be a Canadian, but I do know about feeling safe. And I do know about bladed weaponry.

If you are genuinely worried about your safety, the non-lethal option would be preferable. The possibility of going too far with an inherently non-lethal weapon is a lot less than if you use, say, a live blade.

But if you truly feel that you must go the lethal route, there are things you need to consider.

Bladed weapons require extensive training to be truly used effectively. Swinging a machette at some small branches is a lot different than swinging it at someone. All weapons can be taken from their owner and used against them, and unless you have years to dedicate to the study of bladework, I'd not worry about carrying anything with a blade on it. You'll be mainly a danger to yourself.

Firearms, on the other hand, are much easier to learn and use, so you might want to consider going that route instead. However, whenever you are thinking of using deadly force, the level of threat must be comparable and fair warning must be given.

It's illegal. If it's over 5.5 inches it's a felony, and additional charges apply if you've got it concealed in your vehicle.
If the other person has road rage, drive to someplace safe (like a police station) and honk your horn for help, but whatever you do, don't drive home until you are certain that the other person is gone.
And if they get out of their car, drive away! Just because they are being an idiot doesn't mean you have to be one too. Leave the situation.

It appears that machetes aren not illegal in Texas.

In Texas, individuals may carry knives openly or concealed so long as they are single-edged, and are not daggers, switchblades, or gravity knives. A machete is not included as any of these types of knives.

It is always good to check local laws, since smaller subdivisions may also regulate the ownership, sale, carry or use of any knife or type of knife.

I rather think of you're interior the united kingdom, so the american solutions are beside the point. it actual relies upon on the circumstances, as something might properly be seen an offensive weapon interior the the ideal option circumstances. in case you have been doing a touch gardening, floor clearance or comparable and the machete is inclusive of your different gardening kit interior the boot it is going to likely be large. on the different hand, in case you have it available interior the vehicle it is going to quite be seen as an offensive weapon. all of it boils down interior the top to no count if the courtroom considers you have a stable reason to have it with you.

If you're in a road rage situation, you can't hit him with the machete from inside your locked car anyhow. (You'd be driving a much better weapon than you'd be holding...) Drive away, use your phone.

And the other person with the gun?.. He might just want to scare you.... once he sees the machete, he'll get scared... and kill you.
