why is it that when the Bible seems to be against something
(homosexuality for example) it is to be taken literaly.

but when it is clearly against something that every man and woman do every day it is a parable to be taken as a story to help you get rid of the bad habit?

why do folks pick and choose what they will follow from the Bible.
this part is literal ,this part is a parable, who made us God,s translators.

Capreone Kid
the question is written as it is for a reason.

if i gave a specific as to what it is that people do every day that is against the bible, people would focus on that paticular sin and not think about what it is that they do every day that is against the bible.

i would get nothing but e-Bible scripture quotes about the supposed infraction and no real answers. even if it is a thought that disagrees with mine i at least can respect individual thought.
thanks for your answer.

I don't believe that the bible really comes from god, it was written and re-written by men who already discarded the parts they didn't like and kept the ones they did, everyone else is just keeping up the tradition by interpreting the stories in a way that suits them. I'd love to read the dead sea scrolls, I want to know why, even though it's supposed to be a part of the original bible, that the church condems it, there must be some good stuff in there! Or maybe it contains a page (like in Red Dwarf) that belongs at the beginning of the bible and reads "To my darling Candy, all characters portrayed are fictional and any similarity to those, living or dead is incidental". I laughed so hard when I watched that episode!

Either the Bible is a literal, historical document with some parables in it OR it's complete and total fiction.

Many people believe it's real and that it's literal, but then won't do what it says. There is a term for them, it's called hypocrite. If homosexuality is wrong because the Bible says so, then women wearing pants is wrong, divorce is wrong, women being in the community while menstrating is wrong, uncovered skin is wrong, etc. and each of those 'sins' is just as great as being gay, adultery, murder, stealing, etc.

Hypocrites run 90% of the churches in America. The percentage might even be higher than that. If you go to church and believe the Bible is 100% true, then ask yourself why you don't do everything it says without question?

FTR, I find the Bible to be a very interesting read, but quite unlikely to be true.

The context (the surrounding verses) helps us to determine if a particular verse in the Bible should be taken literally or figuratively. If it is taken out of context, that verse loses its true meaning.

For example, some people will point to John 10:30 to support their trinitarian views. That verse says: "I and the Father are one." Did Jesus mean that he and his Father were part of a 3-person godhead? If he did, then what he said before verse 30 makes no sense. However, the context of verse 30 shows that Jesus and his Father were working together to care for Jesus' followers. They were both in complete harmony with each other concerning the care and protection of Jesus' "sheep" or followers. So, by way of the context, verse 30 is not to be taken literally.

How about the Bible's position on homosexuality? Should what it says be taken literally? At 1 Cor. 6:9, it says that "men who lie with men" will "not inherit God's Kingdom." Should that be taken literally. Of course! If gay people insist on remaining gay, they will be destroyed along with the other people mentioned in verses 9 and 10.

True lovers of the Bible know through study what is to be taken literally and what is to be taken figuratively. They do not pick and choose.

Interesting that you can be specific about something that the Bible "seems" to be against, yet you are very vague when accusing people of doing something every day the the Bible is "clearly against". And who made you the arbiter of God's Word?

This is exactly why Jesus established a Church and a Church authority and gave her His Holy Spirit to lead it to all truth. Man, interpreting on his own, will introduce all sorts of wild ideas. They will pick and choose as is convenient.

a lot of religions make the bible sound like what they want you to believe . read the bible as a book from start to finish and it makes more sense than when you jump from one verse to another. when people tell me that i need to get right with god because the end is coming soon i point out that the bible says not even the angles in heaven know when Jesus will return so why would god tell you ,anyways soon to god could be a million years because a day in the life of god is like a million years.

Jesus used parables to help his listeners understand the story. When tring to explain the different kind of hearts of people..he used seeds sown alongside the road...since he was probably talking to farmers.....
to fishermen he used fisherman stories...to women he would use what was familiar to them.
But when he said not a stone will be left upon a stone he was litterally fortelling the future.

No-one made US God's interpreters. That's why there are so many thousands of conflicting denominations. But God did make His own Church - the one He personally founded for all mankind - the only authorized interpreter of His Word. We can know what each passage means by listening to the Church to which Christ said, "he who hears you hears Me"; and, "whatsoever you bind upon Earth is bound in Heaven". This is why the Bible itself refers to this Church as "the pillar and foundation of truth".

Bible's totally clear on it. People pick and choose because they don't follow God wholeheartedly...they only follow Him this way, or that way. People are hypocrites that way.
God bless.
