I have been suffering with hives for a week now. They are horribly itchy and even burn. They were the result of an allergic reaction I had after taking Amoxicillin for an infection in the root of a broken tooth. I have been taking Benadryl and have been using Hydrocortisone (over the counter) but I still itch like crazy. The Benadryl does reduce the amount of swelling from the hives but is there anything that I can do to reduce the itching? I'm trying not to scratch because I know that won't help but sometimes I can't help it. I have no idea how long they will last. I took the Amoxicillin for 10 days so I wouldn't be surprised if the hives last for at least 10 days as the medicine works itself out of my body.

raylynn_l - It was Amoxicillin that caused this break out. I cannot take anything from the Penicillin family.

Also, I am no longer on the amoxicillin. I took it for 10 days as prescribed. The hives did not appear for an entire 24 hrs after I stopped taking the medication.

Go back to your doctor and ask to be reassessed, you may need a shot of cortisone/predisalone (which is used to reduce the body respnse to reactions etc).

In the mean time dry bathing in pine tarsal (used for chicken pox) this will help the itch, but it stinks like tar. Or you could try calamine lotion.

Make sure avoid penicillin type anti-biotics.

Good luck

I have had hives every day since June 1. The only thing that helps with the itch for me is Hydroxyzine. It does make you very tired, but it sure helps. Good Luck, hives are horrible.

The half-life of Amoxicillin is 0.7-1.4 hours. This means it takes between one to 3 hours for the drug to work it's way out of your system on a single dose. It shouldn't take that long for the reaction/swelling and such to wear off.

those hives can just drive you crazy!!!!!!! Benadryl does help some but it knocks me out and i cant do any thing else. call your doctor there are other antihystamines that dont make you sleepy that arent over the counter. I think also that they can give you a shot to make it more bearable

Try an oatmeal bath like Aveeno for the itching. Also Calamine will help. Hope you feel better soon :(
