okay i have 2 cats, each has their own litter box. one of them has been peeing in their box, but pooping on the floor right outside of it. the litter is clean like i know she likes it, and the only reason i can think of that she isnt using it is because my other one has been going in it alot because shes too old to make it upstairs to her own box, and i know cat 1 is very meticulous about having it be all her own and not share. what should i do to make her use her litter box again? because im gettin sick of seeing little presents on the floor.

Have you tried switching the litter boxes around? Put the meticulous cats box up stairs? give her treats when she uses it.

Could you maybe bring the other cat's litter box downstairs? I don't see why there is a problem here, I have a large home and ten cats. I have litter boxes in various places on all three floors. They all use them without a problem. I've never heard of cats having a problem sharing a litter box and I know a lot of cat owners.
However, if sharing is the problem, then do make the other cat's litter box more available to her. Like right near the one the other cat is refusing to share.

I've never had problems with my cats sharing a box, but then they have a morter pan, not a typical litter box. I have had older arthritic cats become unable to get in and out, and they got a low sided cardboard box ( like a case of beer comes in) that was disposable and on top of a sheet of plastic. There surely can be no reason for keeping a box upstairs if she can't get up there anymore, and your the downstairs cat obviously likes her location or she wouldn't be right by it. Sounds like side by sides are what's called for to me. Good luck.

you should get the other litter box down from up stairs for the old cat and put it some where down stairs..clean the first cats litter box and refill it with litter and then put it in another place and then maybe the cat will use it again...i know from experience.. i have 3 cats that now share a litter box..

Try switching the locations of the boxes. After each cat has used their own box switch them and then take each cat and show them where their new spot is. That's my best guess. Can't hurt to try.

Find a place for the older cat's box downstairs. I have three cats, two boxes and no problems.

you answer your own question. Put another box out that the old cat cant reach and younger cat can reach.

I would also say try to switch the boxed and reward.
Or put both boxes next to each other and reward each cat on when they use the correct one.

Is the pan big enough ? Is it covered ? The cat may be balancing on the side of the litter pan facing the wrong way
