My 7 yr old jack russel terrier (fat and sore jointed not hyper) roll in black sut and dirt. He will do it like three days in a row the stop for weeks. We praise him when he dosen't roll and scold him when he does. HEELLLLPPPP!!!!

Instinct from years ago when wild dogs hunted they tried to cover their own scent. My dog chose dead worms to roll in once so be thankful it's only dirt.

It's been my experience that they do that to relieve itching. I recommend you take him to the vet and have a flea dip done. Your dog will not only stop with it rolling, but will smell GREAT!

have him checked for fleas or skin irritations. my dog had bad skin irritation and used to roll around and scratch her fur off till we used a medicated shampoo. it worked wonders after a month and she even grew her fur back.so take him to the vets and see what they say.
