EVERYONE 40 & OLDER, I WANT YOUR OPINION....
Ok, I'm 47. I know I am overweight (a lot of people are at this age).
I know I should exercise. It's just the way I physically feel lately that has me in such a slump, I do nothing but the necessities. My hands hurt and feel swollen I think from arthritis setting in, my hips hurt terribly most always, it hurts to walk from point A to point B. I've been to the doctors, and he put me on Prozac last month. That does nothing. Every night I fear going to bed, because I get up about 5 times during the night. With all the products out on the market, and the miracle herbs, isn't there something I can take to make me feel better so I can start a daily walking routine, and focus on a diet so I can lose weight? I think it is a vicious cycle that has no ending..... I am over weight because I don't exercise.
I don't excercise because I am too tired. I am too tired because I can't sleep at night. I can't sleep because I hurt all over!

Is there ANYONE else out there that feels this way at their age?? I've heard of "Sea Silver". It is a liquid you mix with water, and is suppose to take care of a lot of cronic conditions. It is expensive, so I wanted to ask around first.
Has anyone heard of or use this product??

Ok I know I'm not 40 but there are better drugs on the market besides Prozac now. Tell your doc that it's not working for you. Prozac is known for making people gain weight. Why don't you take a natural supplement at night to sleep like Valerian root or melatonin. Those work very well. Anyway really talk to your doc about a different medication. What works for one person, might not work for another. Good luck!

i am not a dietitian, but believe me i've read a lot of stuff out there and from personal experience i can give you some advice.
if you truly can't sleep simply because of the pain then losing weight is important, since your weight is probably putting pressure on your joints. BUT you might not have to start exercising right away. i lost a lot of weight from simly changing my diet. i DID do a little more walking because i was travelling for a month in another country doing tours and everything, but when i ame back home my eating habits stuck and i lost more weight.
i used to overeat, and didn't realize it, and didn't realize the weight gain itself, until i started losing it.i lost maybe around 5-10 pounds by doin gthis. my feet used to hurt if i wore things like flip flops, or whatever with no arch support, but when i lost some weight it stopped hurting.
your goal should be to burn either the same amount or more of calories you eat. i believe in women we naturally burn around 1200 calories a day due to normal body functions. so if you were a women let's say, you eat around 1300 calories, then maybe you should walk for like a half hour to burn off that extra hundred.
(a good diet book is the okinawa diet, it talks about this calorie method)
but like you said you're not motivated enough to work out yet, so jsut start making some eating adjustments and the weight will come off slowly.
eating is important, so don't take this as me saying 'starve yourself', but make sure you eat balanced and well. maybe you should start taking a multivitamin, some vitamins help in mood regulation.
---
ask yourself why are you not doing what you need to do, is it because you don't know how, or you just don't want to do it. if you just don't want to do it then ask yourself what's holding you back? fear of failure or etc. just know i nthe end the longer you put if off the more time you are wasting, just get it done
---
also--like others mentioned herbal remedies help, try chammomile tea, it helps me when i'm stressed...but do some research before you take anything and see how it interacts with other medication

I'm over 40 and exercise. I noticed that when I didn't work out for a month, I was REAL tired. I did go get checked at the Doctor. What I discovered is that the day I went back to the gym I felt GREAT. Start out with 20 minutes of walking if possible and drink more water.

I'm 40, had restless sleep patterns, had to drag myself through the work day, unexplained weight since I ate so little, sad /depressed, moody and always had muscle or what I felt as just body ache.
Went to the doctor and was given an anti-depressant...got worse and also developed migraines.
Since I worked in the Med. field, I realized I was suffering the same symptoms I had helped others in properly getting diagnosed for.
I had a dangerously under active Thyroid.
See your Doctor and specifically ask to run labs to check your Thyroid. In fact, don't just leave it at that. Ask For a complete, fasting Chemistry panel, CBC, Sed-Rate with a focus on TSH levels and The Fasting so it will be a reliable measure for your glucose levels...Might as well see if your suspect for Diabetes as well...
Good luck My dear 40ish friend.

Welcome to the downhill slide!! There's nothing worse than waking up everyday and realizing you're that much closer to dead. AND THERE IS NO MAGICAL POTION!! Not even Prozac! The best thing you can do for yourself is to realize how fortunate you are that you got this far, because lots of people didn't. Go to the store and buy cloves, cinnamon sticks, anise stars and ginger root. Simmer them in a pot on the stove. They'll help to lift your mood until you get over this rough patch. As Red Green says "I'm pulling for ya'. We're all in this together."

I'm 45. I lift weights and do sit-ups. Try "TRI-FLEX" from a GNC store. It helps with a lot of aches and pains. Once you've been working out for awhile, and have a flat stomach, you'll feel a lot better about yourself. It's great for the winter, because you'll look better in a sweater, and people will notice, and then you'll want to continue to look that way, so you'll keep working out.

maybe it is menopause ? there are several over the counter meds that you could try to relieve symptoms, look up some info on menopause, see if there is any relation to your symptoms.
