It depends on the bird. I have four parrots (a blue-front Amazon, a Quaker, a Blue-Crown Conure, and a Congo African Grey). If your bird is cheeping, spending time in the bottom of his cage, not eating, and acting ill, then I'd get him to a vet immediately. However, if he is eating, playing with his toys, has a great cage to move around in, constant cleanliness of the cage as big a hassle as that is (believe me I know), plus MOST IMPORTANTLY plenty of attention from you, then the cheeping is his way of communicating his love for you -- (i.e. his mate). Birds are so very intelligent, and few people realize how well they sense our emotions, fears, stress. They are noisy and aggravating sometimes -- and boy are they messy -- but I love mine like children, because having birds is just like having toddlers for the rest of your life.

If it's like a screech, they just do that for fun. My bird actually screeched the tune of "2, 4, 6, 8 who do we appreciate!"
