What about a heaven? A god? Is there any rational or logical reason to believe in any of that? Why do people then believe in such things? Is it a type of mental illness?

I'm with you all the way.
Not a mental illness as such, more an indoctrination of the mind from childhood and the perpetuation of the god-myth into adulthood. From there, anything can happen and usually does.
