I've had both and everything in between. When I lived at home I had 2 small to medium sized dogs, both mutts, mostly terrier, schnauzer, poodle mix and they were great dogs, really smart.
When I got married, my husband and I got a Great Dane, what a sweet dog she was. She was extremely gentle and thought she was a lap dog. The only problem with large dogs is they can have short lives. A few years later we got a Bouvier and a Toy Fox Terrier, talk about a Mutt and Jeff team! The Bouvier was as gentle as a lamb and great with our newborn daughter. The Toy Fox Terrier was a baby and fun to play with and train. We currently have a dog we picked up at a shelter. She weighs about 50 lbs. and is part golden retriever, sheltie, brittany and who knows what. She is a great dog.

I guess what you need to do is weigh how much time you have to spend with the dog. A larger dog needs more walk and play time. A smaller dog can be played with inside the house and go for shorter walks and be happy.

My problem is, I would have a whole houseful of dogs of all sizes if I could!

Why do people assume small dogs are ankle biters???!!! That is like assuming all pitbulls are killers. Come on, give me a break. None of my chihuahuas are biters, of the ankles, hands, whatever. Like with pitbulls it is the way they are raised. I have never heard of a chihuahua killing another dog, or a child or an adult. Small dogs are the best. They are small, cute, cuddly, loveable, sweet and gentle and best of all, not killers.

Going with the giant because small dogs tend to get nervous in a house as busy as mine (3 boys). But really, any dog that is trustworthy with children, and well behaved is welcome in my home.

I prefer the smaller breeds, much easier to handle, groom, and take care of,as they require very little space, and tend to be much easier to train.
