It depends on the species. As others have noted here, the night hunters such as Owls hunt at night and sleep in tree holes during the day.
Birds who scavenge during the day get up at dawn. When the sun begins to set, they head for home, be it a tree, a hole in the tree, or other safe place.
To daytime birds, the dark equals danger. So they settle down in flocks and sleep. They remain quiet so as not to call attention to themselves.
Parrots in the wild do the same as other types of daytime birds and usually get 10 to 12 hours of sleep a night.
They do shut their eyes, and sometimes pull up one foot. They also take small naps during the day when possible.
I try to make sure my parrots get 10 to 12 hours of sleep at night. I have one who sleeps perched with his head pointed down. One has a little rag mop type nest, and the third sleeps on her swing.
I have a friend who has a lot of Macaws who has taught her birds to sleep in dog beds. They actually waddle into a small dog bed, roll over, and sleep on their backs with their feet in the air, although I believe she has a Blue and Gold Macaw that prefers to sleep on his side.

I used to live on the third floor of an apartment and in the evening I would see them coming in the thousands and going into the trees and bamboo next to my apartment. You could hear them sort of settle down as it got dark. Then early in the mornings they would leave - not all at once, but a flock at a time. So interesting.

They bed down at night in bushes & trees, wherever they can feel safe. We even have a number of birds that sleep under our house & redwood deck.

the nap more than full on sleep. the often awake at loud sounds or strange things that startle them. also a way to tell a bird is sleeping is they are often standing on one leg, and their head is often under a wing or facing bacwards resting on a shoulder.

Birds always sleep with one eye open and one closed. Just in case of danger.
