No, this is not true. However, you are right in what I infer is the lack of Bible reading among Catholics. While some in the hierarchy of the Church will say that reading the Bible is encouraged, there is historically not a lot of emphasis on that. Catholicism, is a hierarchical, and authoritarian religion. They do not brook many challenges from the laity, so why press them to educate themselves. You may have mistaken the fact that many Catholic theologians, as well as other critics, said that The Book of Revelations is impenetrable and sort of crazy.

No, not only are they encouraged to read the bible, but if you attended a Catholic Church using the Roman service, every Sunday for three years and every Holy Day, then you would hear nearly the entire bible read except for a few parallel passages or a few census passages. So, if you were sixty years old, you would have heard the bible read 20 times in your life. The parts of the church that use other variations on the services such as the Byzantine read the entire bible over a different cycle of time.

No, that is not true. In fact, John Paul II declared the year 2000, the year of the Bible. Every Catholic was encouraged to read and study the entire bible that year. Virtually every Catholic church has a bible study class. The one at my church is held on Sunday morning at 10:00 am. We are currently studying the book of Matthew. I am a "lector" at my church too, that is, I am a reader of the Bible to the congregation. At every Sunday mass, there are three readings from the Bible, as well as a reading or singing of a Psalm. I don't know who told you that Catholics do not read their Bibles, but they were either misinfromed, or they lied to you.

No, Catholics are encouraged to read the Bible.

The Catechism of the Catholic Church says: The Church forcefully and specifically exhorts all the Christian faithful to learn ‘the surpassing knowledge of Jesus Christ,' by frequent reading of the divine Scriptures. ‘Ignorance of the Scriptures is ignorance of Christ.'

Although some Catholics that do not read the Bible on a regular basis, we all listen to the Word being proclaimed and explained in every Mass.

In every Sunday Mass there are at least four Bible readings
+ First Reading - usually from the Old Testament
+ A Psalm is prayed by all
+ Second Reading - usually from a New Testament Epistle
+ Gospel Reading
+ then the priest bring them all together and helps us apply them to our lives in the homily

With love in Christ.

Where did you hear this from? I'm not a Catholic myself, but I've never heard of a Christian denomination that would tell its followers not to read the Word of God. I would not, however, try to read the Bible without prayerful guidance from the Author, though, because then I really would go crazy.

No.

I think the comment was more like: "If Catholics start reading the Bible the Protestants will go crazy."

No it is merely discouraged because it is always being misinterpreted. We were given the "gospel" at Sunday mass. We had catechism lessons in Sunday School. Given all the stories and interpretations I've read on this site...I must admit they were right on about that one.
