I used to be able to get seasonings like chives and thyme, for 99 cents, at the 99cent store and various drugstores.
They never have those two when I go places that sell other seasonings and spices.
At the regular grocery store, they cost $5-$6 for a tiny little jar, I will use up in no time. Does anyone know a place I can buy these seasonings inexpensively?

If you want them cheaper, try a farmer's market. They sell numerous items very cheap. If that fails, try an Indian grocery store. Spices there are usually inexpensive.

Chives grow about 12 -18 inches high depending on the size of the plant and it grows like green onions do--it is a perennial plant. Dill will grow tall about 3 feet when it produces it's seed pods. It is an annual and will die in winter. If you don't harvest all the seeds it will reseed and send up new plants the next year. Sage and lavender may be classed as small shrubs because they have woody stems. Sage is more winter hardy than Lavender. Both grow no higher than 2 or 3 feet Thyme is a perennial creeping plant no higher than 6 inches Rosemary is a very tender perennial plant. It doesn't tolerate frost at all I've never grown cilantro so I don't know about it

If you're talking about the dried variety of herbs, then an International Market is your best bet. My community has 4 or 5 of them, and they're all small, independently owned shops. Some focus mainly on Asian foods, some on Indian foods, and others on Middle Eastern foods. If you're in/near a city or a large town (in the US), I bet there are similar stores near you.

But they all purchase their dried herbs in bulk, and sell them by the ounce. I've been a customer at one particular shop for about fifteen years. It's owned by a couple from China, and they only buy the highest-quality herbs. They weigh the stuff out, individually bag it, and sell it very inexpensively.

And yes, you could also grow your own fresh herbs, and dry them out yourself (for use in the off-season). Chives are really, really easy to grow, even if you only have a small amount of space. Thyme (along with other herbs) is a little bit harder, but it might be worth investing a few dollars in a few tiny plant "sets" next spring. If you have decent soil and adequate sun, you should be able to grow it with very little trouble.

I starting growing my own in the summer, then in the fall I dry some, freeze some and they taste better than what you can buy. I still be some spices though. A discount grocery store should have what you are looking for unless it something odd or unique.

I don't know where you live...but where I live...I am able to find different spices in the ethnic foods aisle than I can in the spice aisle. Also...I buy spices in the bulk foods section of large grocery stores. Hope it helps. Chives you could grow on your window sill...look for these mini herb gardens...then you will never run out.

They are very easy and inexpensive to grow. I planted them outside in Michigan a number of years ago, and every year they are back again. For use in the winter, you can either freeze or dry them.
