There are two sewing steps in quilting. Piecing is when you sew the smaller pieces of fabric together to make the quilt top. Quilting is when you sew the three layers (top, batting and backing) together. There are many different ways to quilt, including "stitch in the ditch" (or "sewing in the ditch"). In this method, you sew the layers together by sewing in the seams of the quilt top. You quilting is invisible on the top of the quilt. Some people think this is a good beginner method of quilting, but I disagree. You have to be very accurate when you do this, and if your batting requires closer quilting than your block size, you need to trace seams within each block. This is much more time consuming. I think the easiest quilting method for a beginner is just a simple grid - straight lines in each direction, all the way across the quilt.

when you sew two pieces of material together the place where they are sewn is call the ditch.....you do not sew to either side of the seam you sew right down the seam.
